Handle with Care

Clay is a medium sensitive to cracks and tensions during drying, susceptible to gravitational forces, brittle once dry, explosive if fired still wet- it manifestly expresses its fragility and its need for special attention and care. The pieces explore various ways to illustrate both the  vulnerability and resilience potential of this material.
From massaging the body to align the particles of which it is composed, via polishing a special spot to smooth a surface until it shines, to embalming with oil and earth with ultra-fine sigillated particles. Apply bandages to absorb moisture seeking to evaporate and compresses to dab perspiration that oozes out, prepare glaze recipes from natural and mineral raw materials to cover pieces with a protective layer, brush them with ashes rich in alkaline or acidic materials, and patch any cracks that appear.

The form, an allusion to a tombe- or headstone underlines the idea of a memorial of care. In its vertiginous upright position it embodies a natural presence with sculptural intention.
